‘The urge to destroy is also a creative urge’: Banksy strongly hints that he WAS behind the shredding of his iconic painting Girl With Balloon after it SELF-DESTRUCTS moments after it was sold for £1,042,000 at Sotheby’s

Banksy has given the greatest indication that he was the one who set up the shredding of his well-known artwork titled Girl With Balloon after it self-destructed seconds after the gavel dropped down on it for greater than a million at an auction in Sotheby.

The Bristol artist is recorded to have cited Mikhail Bakunin, sharing with flagship news caster Krishnan Guru-Murthy that ‘The urge to destroy is also a creative urge,’ in his interview with Channel 4.

The video catches the total surprise of everyone in the room as a shredder he covertly developed into the frame activated, destroying the painting after it was sold for over a million. A shocked staff of auction personnel can be found talking on the phone to the victorious bidder as the piece of art is demolished before his eyes.

Banksy published the video clip on his Instagram profile, where he disclosed a video of himself creating the shredder.

He said: ‘A few years ago I secretly built a shredder into a painting in case it was ever put up for auction…’

Meanwhile, the co-founder of MyArtBroker, Joey Syer stated that:

‘The auction result will only propel this further and given the media attention this stunt has received, the lucky buyer would see a great return on the £1.04million they paid last night.’
